It probably depends on the age of the scouring mill.
Look out for high pH associated with the caustic agents they used for
extracting the grease (lanolin) from the wool - I have come across up to
pH12. Also - very elevated concentrations of arsenic (as I recall around
250mg/kg) - possibly from the arsenic based pesticides which used to be used
on fleeces (as well as from the boiler ash). Anthrax should be considered
in the wool sorting areas (it is only a couple of years since a wool sorter
at a mill in Bradford acquired dermal anthrax whilst working in an old part
of the factory building). More recent scouring plant might have other
persistent pesticide residues which could also be found in settlement
lagoons.
