Thanks, Jennifer and Alison. I did find on another map that there's a Lady's
Well at Lower Swell, short distance to the west of Stow, so maybe there's
yet more confusion, perhaps just mine.
I've been directed to the charter dated 1016 in which Ethelred 'restored'
the Maugersbury estate to Evesham, but there's something wobbly about the
charter, as Archbishop Dunstan is signatory and he died in 988. Bounds are
probably OK, though.
I've an idea that the altar stone found at Stow was somewhere near the well,
but this may be wishful thinking and an ageing memory.
Whittle = whitwell sounds convincing. There are a number of local springs,
apparently, presumably thanks to geology, so could I suppose be yet another.
