Please find attached an executive summary of "Listening to
Children and Young People". (Please open in Adobe format)
Of all user groups the views of children and young people
are probably one of the most under represented. However
while there is a rhetorical and policy importance
being given to children’s participation and voice, in
practice this is often not taken seriously.
The Listening to Children and Young People project was set
up in response to concerns that the voice of children and
young people was absent from the consultation and planning
process of children’s services, particularly with
reference to mental health issues. It was commissioned by
the South Gloucestershire Joint Children’s Strategy
Workgroup on Child and Adolescent Mental Health and
received £27.5K joint funding from Avon Health Authority 1
and the children’s charity Right Fit.
The Project aims were to:
1) explore the attitudes and perceptions of a broad range
of children and young people towards emotional and mental
health and mental illness
2) extend understanding and awareness of children’s views
and experiences of services in South Gloucestershire.
3) enable children's services in South Gloucestershire to
establish good methods, work practices and arrangements
around listening to children now and in the future so as to
guarantee their continuing effective participation in
service planning and delivery.
