SOCIAL INEQUALITY TODAY
November 12th 2003
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
On Wednesday 12th November, the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion in the Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy at Macquarie University will host a one-day conference on the theme of 'Social Inequality Today'. Papers are invited on any aspect of social inequality and interdisciplinary contributions are particularly encouraged. The notions of 'knowledge society' and 'social inclusion' will provide a focus for the conference's proceedings, but other approaches to inequality will also be explored. For example, relevant topics include:
* Regional, national, international and global inequality
* The identification of the main divisions in knowledge societies
* The key groups advantaged and disadvantaged from knowledge societies
* Public policies that either exacerbate or alleviate social inequality
* Processes, practices and cultures by which individuals and groups are constituted as socially included or excluded
* The nature of power in contemporary societies
* Social theoretical and philosophical perspectives on contemporary social inequality
* Citizenship in an unequal and fractured world
* The role of media in representing and constituting social inequality
The conference will consist of a combination of plenary and parallel sessions. Plenary speakers include:
Professor Nico Stehr (Senior Research Associate, Institut für Technikfolgenforschung und Systemanalyse, Kalsruhe, Germany).
