My only real knowledge is of two "pensions" (actually fees): Sir
Philip Sidney's fee as Cupbearer to Her Majesty (hereditary: his
father had it before him), and Robert Langham's £40 per annum as
Keeper of the Council Chamber. There is no evidence that Sidney's was
not paid (no recriminations, letters etc.), though for him it was a
drop in a holey bucket; and Langham mentions his pension, and the
perks he got from being Leicester's client, with such irrepressible
pleasure that one can only conclude he was paid.
