The Venetian picture collection of Bortolo della Nave
This paper concerns the collection of the Venetian merchant Bartolomeo
della Nave (better known as Bortolo) which was bought by James, 3rd marquis
and later duke Hamilton (1606-1649), in 1638. The aim is to expand and
revise what has been known about the collection and its transfer to London,
using a range of new documents, including an early Italian version of the
inventory, until now known through an unreliable and abbreviated
seventeenth-century English translation which was published by Ellis
Waterhouse in 1952. Van Dyck visited della Nave in 1622, and he had an
opportunity to study the paintings again after their arrival in
London. The copies that he made, particularly in his Italian Sketckbook,
throw light on his understanding of Venetian painting and the collection
itself. The new documentation helps establish how Hamilton displayed the
pictures at Wallingford House and Chelsea House in the period immediately
before the Civil War.
The seminar will finish by 6pm.
