A2A Update, July 2003
The A2A database at www.a2a.pro.gov.uk was updated on 28 July 2003. It now
contains over 4.85 million catalogue entries describing archives held in 327
archives repositories across England.
New catalogues this month include the first appearance of material from two
projects - Local Governance and the Community, and Saints and Sinners.
Local Governance and the Community is contributing catalogues of the
archives of local bodies including parish councils, Poor Law Unions and
schools held in 11 repositories in the South East, and this month's
instalment includes records of District Councils from West Sussex Record
Office, and Poor Law Union and County Council records from Bromley Public
Libraries, Local Studies and Archives. Saints and Sinners is contributing
catalogues of diocesan archives from 8 repositories in London and the South
East, and the material mounted this month relates to various deaneries in
Berkshire and Kent (Berkshire Record Office and the Centre for Kentish
Studies), the Archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight (Isle of Wight Record
Office), and the dioceses of Rochester and Guildford (London Metropolitan
Archives).
A further instalment of material from More than Meets the Eye has been added
this month, reflecting the full breadth of the Documentary Photography
Archive at Greater Manchester County Record Office. The collections cover
all aspects of daily life in the North West through images such as studio
portraits, street portraits, school photographs, and shots of domestic and
work interiors and special occasions, and reflect the rich ethnic diversity
of the region. More information about the scope of the Documentary
Photography Archive is available at
http://www.gmcro.co.uk/photography/DPA/dpa.htm. This month's update also
included further contributions from Campaigning London, Seven Ages of Man,
and South West Family Fortunes.
Those who are planning content projects for A2A Phase 3 (April 2004-July
2005) will be pleased to hear that the Central Team's contribution to the
finances of projects seeking support from the Heritage Lottery Fund has now
been finalised. More information is available, with details on rekeying
and other costs associated with paper retroconversion, on A2A's information
pages at www.pro.gov.uk/archives/A2A/centralcontribsetc.htm.
Finally, we would like to welcome Kirsty McLaughlin to the Central Team.
Kirsty takes over the role of Systems Support from Amma Prempeh, who leaves
to pursue a new life in the US. All correspondence from projects that was
previously directed to Amma should now be addressed to Kirsty

A2A is the English strand in the UK archives network: its database at
www.a2a.pro.gov.uk already contains the electronic equivalent of over
400,000 catalogue pages describing archives held across England in national,
local and specialist repositories and dating from the 900s to the present
day. The A2A programme will make a further 300,000 catalogue pages
available on the web by March 2004.
