The National Primary Care Research and Development Centre (NPCRDC) is
seeking to appoint two researchers at Research Associate or Research
Fellow level to assist in the development of its ongoing programme of
research into the primary healthcare workforce.
Job Description
The post-holders will work under the direction of Bonnie Sibbald,
Professor of Health Services Research, and Hugh Gravelle, Professor of
Economics, to develop NPCRDC’s existing programme of research into how
primary care teams should be configured to improve the quality and
cost-effectiveness of care.
The post-holders will work with a team which includes experts in health
services research, economics, statistics, psychology, psychiatry,
medicine and pharmacy to:
· Design and test survey questionnaires, interview schedules, and
other data collection instruments as appropriate.
· Manage primary data collection e.g. through postal surveys.
· Assist with primary data collection e.g. through interviews.
· Process, clean and analyse primary data.
· Analyse secondary data e.g. NHS workforce census data.
· Write research reports and papers for publication in peer
reviewed journals.
· Disseminate research findings through seminars and lectures.

Person specification
Essential attributes
Research Associates
· Good undergraduate degree (2.1 or better) in a relevant health
or social science discipline.
· Experience of conducting research in the health services or a
related field.
· Good quantitative research skills, including regression
analysis. Training in the analytic techniques used within epidemiology,
medical statistics, econometrics, or the quantitative social sciences
(geography, demography, surveys and censuses, etc) would be particularly
relevant.
· Good written and oral communication skills.
Research Fellows should additionally have –
· Masters or PhD degree in a relevant health or social science
discipline.
· At least 2 years postgraduate experience of research in health
or a related field.
· Experience of managing research from design to completion.
· Good track record of publication in peer reviewed scientific
journals.
Desirable attributes
· Knowledge of primary health care organisation and delivery in
the UK.
· Expertise in workforce-related issues (e.g. human resource
management, labour economics, labour geography, etc.)
· Good track record of securing research grants.
· Experience of qualitative research skills e.g. interview design
and analysis
Pay and conditions
The successful candidates will be appointed to the Scale for Research
Staff in the salary range of £18,265 - £27,330 per annum for appointment
at Research Associate Fellow level or £25,451 – £33,679 per annum for an
appointment as Research Fellow; according to age, qualifications and
experience.
The contract is offered for an initial three-year period and may be
extended, assuming satisfactory performance and future staffing
requirements in NPCRDC. The post-holders will be based in the University
of Manchester but have access to the resources of the Centre for Health
Economics (CHE) at the University of York, where NPCRDC employs a team
of three staff led by Professor Hugh Gravelle.
