Kirchner: Expressionism and the City
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was one of the most important artists
of German Expressionism, an art movement which flourished in the first
two decades of the twentieth century. This exhibition brings together
paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from the period 1905 to 1918,
during which time Kirchner moved from Dresden to Berlin and finally to
Switzerland.
Kirchner was a founder member of the artists' group Die Brücke, the
Bridge, established in Dresden in 1905. The group was extraordinary for
its commitment to connecting art with physical immediacy and for its
departure from accepted artistic conventions, including those of
Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Kirchner continued to explore the
tensions within nature and civilization after the Bridge disbanded and
its initial optimism was destroyed by the outbreak of World War One.
Kirchner suffered a complete physical breakdown in 1917 and never
entirely regained his self-confidence as an artist. However, by the
time of his collapse he had already produced a definitive body of work,
equalled only by Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Shiele.
