YOUTH CULTURE AND GLOBALISATION
This session seeks to explore the significance of globalisation for
young people's cultural practices and sense of identity. It aims to
discuss whether, and if so, how young people construct a 'global
sense of place' and how they negotiate myriad global-local influences
in their search for identity. Contributors are asked to reflect on
the agency of young people in the production of global-local spaces
as well as on the conditions in which identity construction takes
place. Social, cultural and geographical differences in young
people's access to global cultures and ideologies as well as in their
ability to construct their 'own' spaces will form a central area of
concern. There are numerous questions that can be addressed in this
session, such as:
- To what extent does globalisation offer young people alternative
forms of ethnic, gendered and sexual identity?
- How does globalisation change young people's imaginations of future
life-paths and identities?
- To what extent do young people re-territorialise global influences
in their cultural practices?
- What is the role of consumption in the construction of global-local
youth identities?
- How can we conceptualise the 'globalisation' of (youth) culture?
- To what extent can globalisation be seen as a vehicle for
neoliberal ideology and how does the latter affect young people's
sense of self?
- What are the connections between cultural and economic globalisation?
- Why and how do some young people become involved in activist groups
protesting against globalisation and/or reasserting national and
ethnic identities?
This list of questions is not exhaustive and simply hints at the wide
range of issues that are of interest in this session. If you would
like to contribute, please send a 200 word abstract by 15th September
