Hello all
I need some advice on how to manage this CETIS metadata SIG list.
The problem is this: I want to be able to discuss specifications which are
being developed at IMS, before they become public. At the same time I
mustn't allow the SIG to become a back door whereby people can get a sneak
preview at what IMS are doing without paying for suitable membership.
UK HE and FE are covered by Jisc's membership, but list membership is wider
than the .ac.uk domain and with an open archive. I am VERY happy about
having people from outside .ac.uk joining this list, raising the profile of
CETIS is one of our aims, and many of the commercial and non-UK members of
the list have been very helpful. So I do not want to do anything which will
discourage commercial and overseas folk joining in where ever it is possible.
As I see it, I have the following options:
1) Make this list closed: close the archives, make sure no one joins who
isn't from .ac.uk or an IMS member. I don't want to do this.
2) Set up a second list which is closed. We could use this second list for
"private" discussions. This might have the advantage that people who are
only interested in guidance on how to use existing specs needn't get all
the detailed discussion specs still in development. This might be the best
option, but I'm not sure whether proliferation of email lists is a good
thing--we would need to work out what should go to each list, and avoid too
many messages being sent to both.
3) Ad hoc discussion off-list of each spec as they arise. This is sort of
what happens now, and is the easiest option, but I'm afraid it doesn't
foster very wide input.
4) something else. suggestions welcome!
Please let me know what you think, Phil.
