Researcher, Centre for HCI Design, School of Informatics,
City University
Applications are invited for a research post on the ACE (Information
Appliances in Clinical Environments) project at the Centre for HCI Design,
City University. Recent reports by the Department of Health highlight
organisational learning as a key requirement for reducing the recurrence
of adverse events and improving safety and quality of care for patients.
ACE will investigate a novel approach for incorporating 'lessons learned'
into clinical environments through the design of specialised information
appliances. Each such appliance will be designed specifically to maintain
information flow and cooperation between the varied parts of the system
involved in one particular aspect of patient care.
The researcher will be expected to employ cognitive ethnographic
techniques such as observation and interviewing to collect data and model
chosen aspects of an obstetric and a paediatric hospital environment. In
addition, (s)he will be involved with method development, and the design
and evaluation of information appliance prototypes.
The post requires an interest in healthcare issues; the ability to learn,
understand and apply complex theoretical concepts such as organisational
learning and distributed cognition; knowledge and ideally experience in
data collection methods and techniques, HCI, and system design and
evaluation. It also requires excellent written and verbal presentation
skills. Experience in system modelling and UML would be useful.
Candidates should have a good first degree and/or higher degree involving
human-computer interaction and system design. Appropriate subjects
include cognitive science, computer science, software engineering or other
related disciplines.
The post will be full time for one year at City University on the Research
Assistant 1A pt7 scale according to experience and qualifications (21,125
pounds plus 2,134 London allowance). Informal enquiries may be addressed to:
Stephanie Wilson ([log in to unmask]).
