Special Issue of 'Virtual Reality'
Interaction and Usability Issues for Desktop Virtual Environments
Desktop virtual environments are extensively used for presenting interactive
three-dimensional games, training and modelling applications, and encompass
non-immersive and semi-immersive (fish tank) virtual environment systems that
are presented on a desktop monitor. They are distinctive from immersive virtual
environments as they do not aim to support a full and complete sense of
immersion. It could be argued, though, that with the right human factors display
considerations, desktop virtual environments may be just as effective in
presenting virtual environments and supporting immersion for certain
applications. Furthermore, desktop virtual environment systems are a more
affordable option as they do not require the same level of complex and expensive
additional equipment as fully immersive systems. However, research has
highlighted various interaction and usability issues which pertain to the
constraints of a desktop monitor display. This special issue is dedicated to
exploring the interaction and usability issues for desktop virtual environments
and invites papers that may consider, but are not limited to, the following
areas:
* Application/domain specific desktop virtual environments
* Depth Perception
* Usability evaluation
* Spatial layout
* Navigation and wayfinding
* Spatial tasks
* Collaborative virtual environments
* Design issues
* Interaction techniques
* Visualisation
