Dear all,
You may remember that in March 2003 Jane Barton and I posted a draft
paper on metadata creation and quality assurance for digital learning
object repositories: "Quality Assurance for Digital
Learning Object Repositories: The Power of Metadata". We got much
feedback from this list and the DC-General list, as well as a number of
other e-learning and library forums. This issue touched a cord with many
colleagues around the world.
The paper was accepted for the research strand of ALT-C 2003, and we
updated and improved it based on the feedback we received, as well as
adding a bit of new data from the High Level Skills for Industry
project. The final version now has a home on the CETIS Metadata SIG
website (thanks to Phil and Ed for giving us this hospitality!) at:
http://metadata.cetis.ac.uk/usage_survey (scroll down the page). The new
title is: "Quality Assurance for Digital Learning Object Repositories:
How Should Metadata be Created?"
If you have downloaded or printed off a copy of the draft paper, please
replace it with this one. You may now pass this one on to others, link
to it, or reference it. The correct reference is:
Sarah Currier and Jane Barton. To appear in: Cook, J. and McConnell, D.
(Eds.) (2003). Communities of Practice. ALT-C 2003 Research Proceedings.
Held 8-10 September, 2003, University of Sheffield & Sheffield Hallam
University
We are happy to hear further comments or ideas for taking the ideas in
the paper forward for further research. We have also written a new paper
expanded to include similar issues in the ePrints/OAI/FAIR Programme
community, which has been submitted to the Dublin Core 2003 conference
in Seattle; we haven't heard back about this one yet.
Thank you very much to everyone who helped us with this paper.
Best wishes
Sarah
