Dear List members,
Thanks for giving me this opportunity to interact with
you. I have long heard about Functional Electric
Stimulation (FES), and i've even seen a documentary on
this. What struck my attention was the story of a
young paraplegic boy who can now as a result of this
ingenuity, get aroung using a pair of crutches.
I am a physiotherapist and i have two chronic
neurological cases that will do anything to get better
in their functional activities.
Both are in their early sixties. The first is a
Chronic CVA, right hemiplegic who has since treatment
regained some level of mobility/ walking without using
an aid. His residual problems include:
- Paresis/ weakness of his right upper limb,
specifically his elbow flexors(3-),elbow extensors(2),
Shoulder flexors(3-), Extensors(2), Abductors/
adductors(2), wrist extesors(1) and poor hand grip. I
believe there might be more to what he can acheive
using this new innovation called FES. Probably he
might be able to dress himself, drive and maybe write
again.
The second case is a long standing case of
quadruplegia who now has regained some sensation up to
the T11 dermatome. He currently has some upper limb
function, gross Oxford Muscle grading(3) but has no
hand function, no grip, but good wrist movement. Other
problems are urinary incontinence, lack of bowel
control, and no lower limb function.
Please i hope you can give me some great information
/advice on the use of FES for these cases and just if
there is anything we can do to improve on them, i
would be most ready, and trust me they are too. Please
let me know on time because they have since( on
hearing about FES) gotten so impatient and anxious to
know more.
Hope to hear from you soonest.
