QUALITATIVE RESEARCHER FOR A STUDY OF THE PRACTICAL AND ETHICAL PROBLEMS OF A SURGICAL RANDOMISED CONTROLLED TRIAL (RCT) (HF03010)
RESEARCH STAFF GRADE 1A
Salary £27,339 p.a.
We are looking for an experienced qualitative researcher for 12 months to conduct in-depth interviews with the surgeons, physiotherapists and patients who were invited to take part in the spine stabilisation trial. This one year, qualitative study will seek to identify the factors that influenced the participation of clinicians, therapists and eligible patients in a UK randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing spine stabilisation surgery with a 3 week rehabilitation programme. The trial has now closed but it recruited far fewer patients than had been envisaged by the participating centres. The Medical Research Council, which funded the original trial, has funded a follow-up study to further our understanding of research design, recruitment and management issues with an overall aim to contribute to the design of future RCTs. You will be responsible for collecting and analysing face to face and telephone interviews with clinicians and patients at six sites around the UK.
The researcher will be based in the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and with Sue Ziebland in the Division of Public Health and Primary Care. A PhD in a social science (or equivalent research experience) is essential as is experience of qualitative research in an academic environment. Further details can be obtained from The Assistant Administrator, Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Botnar Research Centre, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, OX3 7LD or email address [log in to unmask] or from [log in to unmask] If you wish to apply for this post please send two copies of your full curriculum vitae with a covering letter to the above address by Monday 16 June 2003.
