They were where ropes were made and consequently were long pieces of land. I believe Defoe refers to caves in Derbyshire being used for this purpose. The Rope Walk near Nottingham Park was another. Close by where we live is a cul-de-sac called the Rope Walk which was a rope walk adjacent to the railway line, a long strip of land.
