Hi Julia,
When I was working as SMR Officer at Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust we
made large parts of our SMR available online through the Archaeology
Data Service. I do not know of any adverse reactions from landowners
that occurred as a result of doing this (though I s'pose issues may have
arisen since I left CPAT). For the most part I would say that landowners
were not aware that we had made the data available online and I would
very much doubt that they had an influx of people trespassing on their
land as a result of our actions.
We did include the following statement in the description of our
resource on the ADS site:
'The inclusion of a site in the SMR does not imply any rights of public
access. Although some monuments, such as those in the care of Cadw:
Welsh Historic Monuments, are 'open to the public' most sites on the SMR
lie on private land and anyone wishing to visit these, for any reason,
must obtain permission from land owners and tenants first.'
Best wishes,
Jen

Subject: SMR information online - adverse reactions from landowners
Importance: High
Dear all,
In considering our HLF application, the expert advisor has suggested
that we consider the risk of adverse reactions from landowners to SMR
information being made available over the Internet. We were wondering if
anyone has experience of this as result of putting SMR info online, or
perhaps as a result of the entry-level CSS scheme being piloted at
present? A quick response (on or off the Forum) would be much
appreciated!
