Dear colleagues,
It is now the fifth year since Giulia Iori and myself had the idea to
open this web utility devoted to the interplay between Finance and
Physics. The aim whose to contribute to the knowledge sharing of a
growing community of scientists applying their know how to the
understanding of financial markets. Clearly the spectrum of this
contribution is vast ranging from market practice to fundamental
understanding of the dynamics of a complex system. Actually is my
conviction that the big contribution we brought in the field is a
rigorous method,a constructive criticism and the passion in observing
and describing the world around us and not only to technicalities
familiar to us. After all I do not think that the familiarity with
advanced mathematics techniques is enough to explain the physicist's
success in the City, but our way of applying sophisticated
technicalities to pragmatically solve problems should have played e
major role. The sentiments that we may evoke are also discordant
ranging from surprise to profound skepticism.
Probably the community of finance-and-physics, with more than 500
subscribers, may be considered as a representative set of people
interested in the advances brought by Physicists in Finance.
Therefore we may try to ask to ourselves, as physicists in finance,
what we did, where we are and where we are going.
Should you be so kind to use five minutes of your time writing me
what are your feelings about the obtained targets, the situation of
the actual community and the future potentials for the application of
physics to finance, I will try to compile them and send you back a
quick summary.
Please just do not forget to tell me who you are (student,
researcher, practitioner,...) and where (University, Bank, ...), and
most important what is your experience in constructive synergies and
destructive interferences with other professional profiles.
In order to avoid an unpleasant flow of mails to all the members of
the list may I advice to write directly to me. I will then compile
all the answers and make them available from the
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/finance-and-physics.html site.
I will conclude encouraging you to use the list as a constructive
tool for knowledge sharing, after all if you have a problem there may
be some one facing the same dilemma with which you may share
experience and solutions.
Let me thank you for the kind attention and for the numerous answers,
I hope, you will get back to me.
Believe me,
Very sincerely yours,
Gabriele Susinno
