Greetings from Toronto, Canada
I've been on this list since February 2001 and these are actually the very
first messages I can recall getting.
I'm drawn to respond to Arni's comment:
Several possible threads have emerged already, e.g. what is the role of a
dramaturge, when can you honestly call yourself a dramaturge, the
comparison
between practices in the UK and USA, practical queries, etc. We have the
makings of an interesting future here, or perhaps 'the beginning of a
beautiful friendship'.
Just so anyone out there knows, there is a healthy, vibrant dramaturgy
community in Canada as well as USA with quite a different perspective. I
recently published a book, co written with American Lynn M. Thomson
entitled BETWEEN THE LINES: THE PROCESS OF DRAMATURGY (Playwrights Canada
Press 2002) that offers conversations with Canadian and American
dramaturgs. What emerged, to my mind, most clearly, is that in Canada the
history of dramaturgy is synonymous with the history of play development.
In the USA, it is quite different as there is also a tradition, albeit
youngish, of production dramaturgy. If anyone in the UK or Australia is
interested in the book and what the dramaturgs have to say, it is
available there through Nick Hern Books, or by order from Theatre
Communications Group in the USA, from Playwrights Canada Press in Canada
(or by mail order/email order as well from TheatreBooks in Toronto)
