Conference "Connecting Cultures" at the University of Kent at
Canterbury, 2-4 April 2004.
Proposals for papers of 20-30 minutes are invited for the following
panel, organised by Birgit Haas, Bristol:
POWER AND CULTURE
"The Multiple Faces of Political Theatre":
1. How does political power manifest itself? Public performance in the
political arena, political rituals.
2. In which ways is political power attacked by the theatre? Critical/
subversive theatre.
3. Political theatre/ drama which sustains/ supports the power of the
state/ of totalitarian regimes.
Papers may address the following aspects:
· display of political power through public performance of politicians
· political rituals which sustain power in modern democracies/
totalitarian regimes
· symbolic actions and power: politics and political theatre
· theatre architecture as manifestation of power
· total theatre
· subversive theatre
· The Living Theater and political power
· role of directors, eg. The Theatre of the Oppressed: Augosto
Boal
Comparative approaches are welcome. The conference language is English.
