Dear all
I sent an e-mail about the next SRA Evening Seminar earlier. It's been
brought to my attention that I mistakenly said the date of the event was
Wednesday 30 June, when it is in fact Monday 30 June. Apologies for any
confusion! Below is a correct version of the notice.
Yours sincerely
Juliet

>
> Great Expectations: The Social Sciences in Britain - Where Next?
> Professor David Rhind
>
> Why Great Expectations? Professor David Rhind, the Chair of the Commission
> on the Social Sciences says that the title was chosen because many people
> have high hopes for what social science can contribute in the 21st
> century. Quoting David Blunkett's speech to the ESRC Annual Conference in
> 2000, "Social science should be at the heart of policy-making. We need a
> revolution in relations between government and the social research
> community - we need social scientists to help determine what works and
> why, and what type of policy initiatives are likely to be most effective."
> The Commission's recently produced report provides a lively and detailed
> review of the state and health of the social sciences with a range of
> recommendations for government and the research community.
>
> David Rhind's talk will cover how the report came about, what the
> Commission has identified as the top priorities for the social sciences in
> Britain, how the recommendations are to be taken forward and by whom, and
> what are the messages for researchers?
>
> There is no need to book, all you have to do is turn up. The seminar is
> free to SRA members, while a small charge of £5 is payable by non-members.
> The seminar will take place at Jurys Hotel, 16-22 Great Russell Street,
> London WC1B 3NN (nearest tube is Tottenham Court Road: see the following
> web page for a map - http://www.jurysdoyle.com/uk/jpguk/gtrussel.htm).
>
> The seminar will start promptly at 5:00pm, followed by drinks in a local
