An issue has come up in relation to our notes for the NRG on “Beyond the
Pale”. As Trejago has his first flirtatious exchange with Bisesa, there is
the following passage:
‘…the little voice beyond the grating took up ‘The Love Song of Har Dyal’ at
the verse where the Panthan girl calls upon Har Dyal to return…’
What is the significance of ‘Panthan’. Surely not a misprint for ‘Pathan’ ?
If so it has survived many editions over 100 years.
Any thoughts will be most gratefully received.
