Murray Simpson raises an interesting question here on how families
are perceived, not least now that 25% of Children's Fund money has to
be spent on crime prevention and we are seeing a growing overlap
between being young and vulnerable and being young and an
offender. Splash schemes to prevent youth crime in the summer are to
be financed via Connexions so the boundaries are becoming fuzzy in
terms of the identification and treatment of problem families with the
threat of criminality. There are already sanctions in place to ensure
that parents/carers ensure compliance of their children in offending
behaviour programmes
Having said that I have been involved in the evaluation of a number of
parenting projects (and continue to do so) and I have been
tremendously impressed with the potential of early intervention
projects to help families in crisis. How do issues of labelling and
targetting fit with notions of natural justice?
