SOCIAL INEQUALITY TODAY
First Call for Papers
First annual conference of the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion in the Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.
November 12th, 2003
We consider equality of opportunity, and a decent standard of living for everyone, to be the hallmarks of a good society. But patterns of inequality seem to be changing and new concepts may be needed to understand them. The conference will explore current approaches to social inequality with a view to re-assessing the modern egalitarian vision.
Keynote speaker: Professor Nico Stehr, University of British Columbia.
Contributions are welcome from a range of disciplinary perspectives, especially, but not necessarily, on the following topics:
The changing economic stratification of society (globalisation and the changing role of the welfare state); social inequality and cultural change; social inequality in "knowledge societies"; inequality and the politics of recognition; inequality and justice; inequality and governmentality; media representations of social inequality.
Proposals together with an abstract of no more than 350 words should be sent by July 24th, 2003 to:
