Hi Paul,
A critical consideration in choosing a digital video camera is knowing what
hardware and software you will be using to capture the video. Apple, for
example, has a list of "qualified" devices that work with their hardware and
software (e.g., Final Cut Pro and iMovie). If you don't have a camera on
their list, it's quite possible that the software won't even recognize that
your camera is connected.
Manufacturers of digital video camcorders use various IEEE 1394 protocols
(aka firewire, iLink, etc), not all of which are compatible with the various
hardware and software packages on the market.
I would also second Martin's concern with sound quality. Definitely
consider a camcorder that has a connection for an external microphone.
