BRUNEL UNIVERSITY

PhD fellowship: Ethnographic research in Alternative and Integrated
Healthcare

Vacancy Ref: C7098/1

Full time for 3 years (4 years pro rata for CAM practitioners wishing to
continue clinical work)

The Department of Health's national Complementary and Alternative Medicines
Award (CAM) Scheme, has recently funded Dr Christine Barry, in the
Institute of Health & Society at Brunel University, with a post-doctoral
fellowship, to conduct ethnographic, anthropologically informed research
into alternative and integrated medicine. This funding contains provision
for a 3 year PhD studentship, employed on the RA1a salary scale.

We are now inviting applicants with a good honours degree (upper second or
above) in a relevant social science discipline; preferably with experience
of qualitative research and an interest in ethnographic, anthropological
and sociological approaches, to apply. It is anticipated that the
successful applicant will have experience in CAM and commitment to a career
in CAM research.

The PhD researcher will be expected to employ ethnographic methods to
examine detailed interactions during prolonged fieldwork engagement,
looking at CAM in the context of everyday practice and patients' everyday
lives. Possible projects might include:

1. A study comparing medical and lay homeopathy training.
2. Research which focuses on how contextual factors of training and
practice of alternative medicine impact on CAM as practised inside and
outside the NHS, by NHS and non NHS practitioners.
3. Evaluation of the degree to which manifestations of a particular therapy
are similar or different, from therapist and patient perspectives, and the
contextual reasons for such differences.
4. Patient's experiences of a specific alternative therapy as observed in
the context of everyday interactions.

Other projects will be considered as long as they utilise an ethnographic
approach to CAM in everyday contexts.

The PhD researcher will be based in The Centre for the Study of Health
(directed by Professor Ian Robinson) which is based in The Institute of
Health and Society, a multi-disciplinary research centre that includes
anthropology, sociology, social policy and health economics approaches to
studying health care. The Institute is based in the department of Human
Sciences, which houses one of the largest groups of medical anthropologists
in the country. Social Anthropology has achieved good ratings in both HEFC
assessment of its teaching quality and in the recent HEFC RAE exercise. The
quality of social anthropology research training has also been acknowledged
by the ESRC who have awarded Mode A recognition (1+3 basis) for both our
full-time and part-time PhD programmes.

We can offer an exciting and stimulating environment for postgraduate
research in an established programme of research training. The Department
as a whole has over 60 research students studying anthropology, sociology
and psychology. All students commencing their PhD programmes in October
2003 will initially be registered for and be expected to complete a Master
of Research in Social Anthropology in their first year.

Dr Christine Barry is willing to discuss the scheme with potential
applicants. Telephone 0l895 274000 ext 4851. Email:
