MHRA RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIP
The Modern Humanities Research Association has recently made the generous
award of a Research Associateship to the Cologne Edition of Heinrich Böll's
works, under the co-directorship of Professor Frank Finlay of the Department
of German, University of Leeds.
The MHRA's scheme makes awards to "established corporate projects such as
dictionaries, textual editions, bibliographies, or other major scholarly
enterprises" which are designed "to hasten the completion of projects of
special importance through the provision of part-time research assistance".
The award is made "solely for the employment of a researcher, normally
post-doctoral, to be selected and appointed by the project in consultation
with the Association, and bearing the title of 'MHRA Research Associate'".
An further feature of the award is "to provide an interim academic position
to younger scholars who have not yet obtained a permanent academic post". As
a consequence the Department of German, as host institution, will offer a
limited amount of additionally remunerated teaching or other approved work.
The Department has approximately 100 students at each of its four levels of
undergraduate studies and enjoys a lively research culture and excellent
facilities within the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, the largest
of its kind in the country.
Applications are now invited for the academic session 2003-2004. Candidates
should have completed, or be very close to completing, a PhD in an area
germane to the project. A specialisation in post-war German literature, an
excellent command of written and spoken German, and a good working knowledge
of standard computer applications are desirable. No previous experience of
editorial work and the specially developed computer software is required, as
training will be given. Some archival research in Cologne may be involved.
The successful applicant will also be able to avail themselves of staff
training courses offered by the University.
This is an opportunity for a young scholar to enhance his/her current
profile via the acquisition of new skills and expertise and the involvement
in a major international project.
Work on the "Kölner Ausgabe der Werke Heinrich Bölls" commenced in 1997 and
will continue until 2012. The first of the 27 volumes, published by
Kiepenheuer & Witsch, were launched at a press conference by the Federal
Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, in October 2002, an event widely reported in
the German media. It is funded by a range of institutions, including the
Erbengemeinschaft Heinrich Böll, the Federal Office of Culture, the State of
North-Rhine Westphalia, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and the Universität
Siegen.
