Sorry for Cross postings!
Dear Colleagues
Some of you had been planning to go to Beijing for the 2003 IIS
conference which has been put off to 2004. As I have had some
inquiries concerning my own sessions in the ESA conference in
Murcia in September 23-27, 2003, here is a proposal:
All those who have had their papers accepted in Beijing could send
their proposals as soon as possible to Murcia, either to be included
in some existing session or presented in additional sessions. The
deadline for presenting abstracts is already over but as the proposals
have been sent and accepted before the deadline, this should not be
a hindrance. Of course, it depends on the good will of organisers and
coordinators, but I do believe it would be a welcome addition to the
ESA conference program. Moreover, it would not be in any way unfair
to IIS, as those people wo wll go next year to Beijing would either
have had an occasion to present the paper and thus improve it, or
very probably would in any case write a new paper for next year.
I have discussed this with some colleagues in the ESA but as usual
some of the more rigidly minded colleagues have strongly opposed
this proposal. I am therefore making it as an individual sociologist, to
other colleagues. You may take it or leave it! I have personally
accepted two proposals emanating from Beijing, before the
conference was put off and I strongly recommend that others will do
the same. Sociology will gain from it and nobody will lose.
Best greetings
J P Roos
(former Vice President of ESA, co-organizer of ESA Helsinki
conference)
