Dear subscriber to this mailing list,
The European Family Policy Database provides comparative and country-
specific data and information on family policies in 16 European countries.
It principally includes all EU member-states (with the exception of
Luxembourg) plus Norway and Poland and focuses on specific measures of
family policy.
For the purpose of the database, family policies are defined as public
policies explicitly targeted at families or policies that expressly
consider families in their institutional regulations. The aim of the
database is to facilitate comparative family-policy analyses by providing
data on the lowest possible aggregation level, by utilizing standardized
variables and by accurately indicating institutional regulations. The
target audience are interested researchers who want to compare family
policies across different European countries.
The database primarily offers quantitative time series (statistical raw
data, no indicators) provided in standardized form across all countries for
three core fields of family policy: 1) Cash benefits for families in
general; 2) Cash benefits especially for single parents; and 3) Child-care
services. Data are supplemented by institutional information. For several
countries statistical and institutional information on measures related
to ‘Existence minimum (family dimension)’ or ‘Cash benefits and time-rights
related to parenting and caring for children’ is also included.
The European Family Policy Database was built up at the Mannheim Centre for
European Social Research in the Framework of the project ‘Family Change and
Family Policy in Comparative Perspective‘. In February 2001,
the 'MZES/EURODATA Family Policy Database' was transferred to the Austrian
Institute for Family Studies (ÖIF), Vienna, as coordinator of the 'European
Observatory on Family Matters' where the database is being updated.
