SEMINAR ON CULTURAL POLICY AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION
The Centre for Public Policy and the Centre for Cultural Policy and
Management at the University of Northumbria is currently undertaking a
research project on the impact of cultural policy on social exclusion. This
research is funded by the European Commission DG Social Affairs and aims to:
* Draw on transnational policies and practice to examine the
ways in which states have sought to encourage those who are socially
excluded to engage with cultural activities and document which communities,
groups and individuals have been included in this process.
* Look at the way in which access to cultural services and
activities can successfully assist with combating poverty, promoting social
cohesion and enhancing tolerance and a deeper understanding of the cultural
diversity of Europe.
* Help to identify the barriers that exist with regard to
increased access to cultural services and activities, and also to the
recognition and expression of different cultural identities.
The research team has recently received additional funding to organise an
international seminar to bring together researchers with an interest in
social exclusion and cultural policies in a European context. The seminar
will be held in Newcastle on the 11th-12th July 2003. The seminar will offer
academics the opportunity to meet, discuss and network with scholars from
Europe in the fields of cultural policy and social exclusion. It will
include brief presentations from participants which will leave plenty of
time for discussion. There will also be plenty of opportunity to explore the
city of Newcastle which is competing to become the European Capital of
Culture for 2008. Accomodation will be provided.
If you are interested in attending the seminar and would like to present a
brief paper please contact Lucy Grimshaw before May 23rd.
