Hi list
I put my moderator's hat on. I have picked up a certain sense of
frustration amongst members of the list which I share. There is the
perception that lots are leaving when in fact we have had a handful who have
left the list publicly rather than through the usual self deletion route
that does not get posted to you all.
Should we be concerned? I offer this hasty overview and some suggestions:
Generalising the list is made up of
95% lurkers who enjoy mailings but do not feel strongly -or confidently? -
enough to contribute themselves. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with
being a lurker.
And then there are the 5%posters who tend to post about
a) their pet project eg T2U, development issues, etc
b) their pet hobby horse eg the evils of multiple choice, biz studies v
econ, my board/syllabus is best, etc. I know because I do this :-)
c) exciting new resource they have found. As we all become web savvy by
definition there are fewer and fewer innovative resources.
d) news eg government to abolish A level economics or give £x,000 grant for
teaching development - they are not. But just one advance warning posting
from this list
e) difficult ideas and concepts that could benefit from some discussion.
Most of us are a little put off at demonstrating less than full
understanding in public. But I enjoy these postings the most
f) strategies for teaching
g) tactics for promoting our subjects.
My extension strategy
Let us posters commit to more of c-g and less of a & b. I like the idea of
posting on books of the week. I will make an effort to post on c-g and lets
see how it goes
Providing we continue to be a must subscribe to forum we will thrive. If we
simply become a means of distributing info on pet projects and hobby horses
we are wasting an opportunity and for those thinking of leaving - their
time.
