If you type in "Invacar" on Google and use the "Images" search, you can find quite a few photos of these vehicles. My husband has a photo of one as his "desktop picture" on his laptop :-) (he's a fan of "microcars" in general as well as being interested in disability-related stuff.) There were several different models. They were cute, but I've been told by old-timers around here that the brakes were very poor and this resulted in lots of accidents. I guess the upshot is, more mobility than you get with a modern sidewalks-only scooter, but not as nice as an adapted car.
BTW, for Americans and others on the list, the UK still funds adapted transport as a benefit. Normally it's now a normal car or van, adapted with the right sort of controls/equipment for the person's disability. I have heard that sorting out the grant and getting the adaptions done can be a hassle, but I've seen some nice examples at disability equipment shows. Sure beats the "one cheapo wheelchair for life" situation low-income Americans on SSI are usually faced with, eh? I don't know if it's a means-tested benefit (i.e., available only to people under a certain income) or not.
