Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Last week we brought you the story of 9-year-ld Kelly Molenaar from the
Netherlands and the suit in her name for “wrongful life”. Earlier today,
Radio Netherlands hosted a panel discussion on the case. The guest
panelists were Alexander von Schmid, an academic and Mirjam den Boer who
is director of external relations of an organization that counsels women
and their partners whose unborn children have been diagnosed with a
disability. Noticeably absent from the discussion panel was any
representation from the disability community. How can any real
discussion of bioethics and the right to life be entered upon without
the participation of the very people who are affected by these issues?
It would seem that there is great concern within civil society for the
consequences of choices made relating to disability issues, yet there is
still a lack of awareness and engagement of the disability community
from society in general. We must continue to make are presence known and
our voice!
s heard.
