Dear Sara,
Parents experiences with specialists could be different if (a big if)
physicians and other "specialists" are trained to respect parental expertise
and to communicate compassionately with parents. And, experienced parents
need to be a part of that training along with adults with disabilities. Not
at all easy to get such training into the system. In 1993, I published "The
Challenge of Communicating with Parents" in Developmental and Behavioral
Pediatrics (Vol 14, #3, June 1993).
A more positive and hopeful, yet realistic, perspective on parents'
experiences comes through in several current books including the book of 63
essays by "veteran" parents that I edited with Kim Schive: You Will Dream
New Dreams. Inspiring personal stories by parents of children with
disabilities. Published by Kensington Books in 2001. Book is available at
www.DisABILITIESBOOKS.com and other online bookstores.
Apologies for the self promotion
Stan Klein
