There is certainly far more awareness now in our forward planning groups
of user involvement in decision making, but a minimal amount in reality.
In the field of Health Visiting there is very little training and
education on disability, hence the lack of confidence in so many of my
colleagues. The social model has made very little impact so far.
There is talk, in my area of appointing someone with responsibility for
the health needs of "Looked after children", certainly the understanding
of Health is holistic, encompassing mental wellbeing etc. I think that the
views of individuals are being sought. However, in the area in question,
there are very few children in this bracket. As regards families with
children, with disability, where the numbers are far higher, it is thought
that there are 'so many proffessional/specialists involved', that they are
well catered for.!! I would be interested to hear of any research shows
what the 5-18 year old wants in terms of support.
