Dear WG / IG Members,
Please excuse the cross-post. I expect portions of this email to be of
interest to both the Registry WG and the Localization and
Internationalization IG.

There are three items I would like to bring to your attention:

- Registry phase 2 completion
- Translate Tool: a Registry application-interface demo application
- The distributed Registry

The principal deliverables of the phase 2 Registry
(http://dublincore.org/dcregistry/index.html) are the administration
component, the application interface and some internal restructuring to
facilitate locale-specific and domain-specific extensions of the distributed
Registry model. I am pleased to announce the completion of this work.

The application interface consists of 8 services which provide information
about registered items. These services are described, in machine-readable
form, at http://dublincore.org/services/inspection.wsil. Additional
information, and sample source code, is available on the prototype machine
at http://wip.dublincore.org/.

A companion application - the DCMI Translation Tool - is also now available.
This tool is open-source and serves 2 purposes:

- Provides a convenient, and simplified, means of translating the DCES,
qualifiers, etc. and for translating the Registry user interface.
- Demonstrates, by example, how an application can utilize the Registry
application interface.

The application is available at:
http://wip.dublincore.org/translate/index.html. There is also a link on
this page for the application source code.

The translate tool currently supports English, German and Japanese user
interfaces, and includes a property editor which facilitates the creation of
additional translations. I encourage you to try this application,
particularly if your language is not currently supported by the Registry, or
if the current Registry translation is incomplete.

I am also pleased to announce the installation of the first distributed
Registry at the University of Library and Information Science in Tsukuba,
Japan (http://fiord.ulis.ac.jp/dcregistry/index.html). This registry
supports the CJK translations and includes an additional schema that defines
a 'transcription' element. This is an excellent example of extending the
base registry to include items that are important to a specific community or
domain. Additionally the ULIS registry incorporates the phase 2 application
interfaces, which are being used to communicate changes between it and the
Registry in Dublin. It is an amusing irony that the Registry itself is the
first consumer of it's own application interfaces.

We hope to install another distributed Registry at the University of
Goettingen in Germany in the near future and are actively recruiting
volunteers who are interested in installing a Registry at their site.
Please let me know if you would be interested in participating.

As always, your comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Best Regards,
Harry Wagner
