I am a post-graduate working as planner in the county municipality of Sogn
og Fjordane, Norway.
The last 10 years as many as 500 people from Netherlands have moved up
here, to the sparsely populated and desolate westcoast, because they seek
peace, space, nature, i.e. an alternative life style. This phenomena has
received attention by the press, but there is no organized policy or
strategy from regional politicians to concider these people as a resource
worth fighting for. Instead, alot of effort is put into persuading people
who already moved out, to come back after education and marriage.
Do you know any litterature or research on this "opposite trend"; people
who seek an alternative life style: becoming rural instead of urban, and
move from cities to the rural areas. Who are these people, do they have
different values or interests, age group, social level, motivation for
doing this?
A regional trend is, as far as i know, regions competing against each other
for resources, money, employees, innovation etc. What about regions
competing for inhabitants? Has someone experience in regional "marketing"
towards such groups of people?
If you have any tips on literature or research i would be happy to receive
them.
regards
Tor G Eriksen
