NEW MSc in 'Sustainable Tourism'
Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change
Sheffield Hallam University, UK
Sustainable tourism plays a key role in modern day
tourism and this innovative new course reflects the
increasingly important connections between tourism and
sustainablity, and examines how sustainable
development can be achieved in tourism industry
practice. Professionals working in the tourism
industry need to appreciate how tourism operates in
the wider context of sustainable development and the
challenges of applying sustainable principles in
practice. They need to recognise the complexities
involved in the competing needs of tourists, the
tourism industry, destinations and local communities.
The course draws on the international work carried out
by specialist staff within the Centre for Tourism and
Cultural Change and the Centre for Environmental
Conservation and Outdoor Leisure, and integrates the
latest ideas and research in the sustainable tourism
field into the course. On graduating from this
course, you will be suitably qualified for employment
in a broad range of sectors. There are many exciting
career prospects within government agencies, for
example working on regeneration initiatives or for
national tourism organisations. Within the private
sector, graduates could work in a diversity of tourism
organisations that use sustainable principles, for
instance specialist tour operators, accommodation
providers and visitor attractions.
The course offers a diverse range of interesting
topics, taught by specialist staff. Sustainable
Tourism examines how sustainable development
principles are applied in practice within the tourism
industry. Sustainability Development uses case
studies to explore the work of various sectors in the
formulation of policies and the implementation of
environmental management and sustainability. Visitor
Management looks at visitor demands and the demands of
other users of rural areas, as well as encouraging you
to develop management solutions to conflicts. Tourism
Policy and Planning investigates the influence of
public and private sector interventions on the
business environment. Tourism, Culture and Society
examines different cultures in relation to the
tourist, the tourism industry and host communities.
Destination Marketing examines how such marketing
operates in practice, and looks at current trends,
issues and ethical challenges in this area. Critical
Thinking and Investigation Methods concentrates on
developing the skills you require for studying and
carrying out research at Masters' level. An Applied
Management Project provides you with an opportunity to
carry out a practical consultancy project within the
areas of tourism and culture, while the Dissertation
gives you the opportunity to undertake your own piece
of research. A good dissertation that explores and
researches a new area can help you immensely to
impress potential employers and achieve your career
ambitions.
