The 5th International Conference of the EACL, "The Genre of the Novel
in Contemporary World Literature: A Leap or a Standstill?", focuses on
the position of the novel in the era of (late) postmodernism and
globalization. The conference seeks to address the following issues:
· How has the novel reflected the accelerating social processes in the
21st century?
· Have there been any principal changes in the novel genre compared to
the modernist/avant garde novel of the first forty years of the 20th
century or the postmodernist textual practices of the novel as emerging
in the 1970s and 1980s?
· Has the increasing commodification of society and onslaught of mass
culture left any room for aesthetic-perceptual innovations in the novel
genre?
· What is the dynamics between the national and the international in
the novel genre on the level of creative processes, reception and
distribution?
· Has ever-growing globalization, contributing to the decomposition of
national myths, brought about a decline of national novelistic
practices?
· How does the critical-theoretical discourse of the postmodern age
relate to the novel genre?
· What 'language' should the novel 'speak' in order to maintain a
dialogue with other cultures and nations without losing its national
identity?
Papers highlighting the aesthetic-perceptual position of the novel
genre in different parts of the world at the start of the new
millennium from the comparative theoretical and cultural perspective
are particularly welcome.
The main working language of the conference is English, but papers can
be presented also in French, Spanish and German. In the latter case, a
summary of two to three pages in English should be mailed to the
organizers by Sept 15, 2003. The summary will be made available at the
conference. There will be no translation of the papers at the
conference.
The deadline for submitting the application form, containing the final
title of a 20-minute paper and a 250 - 300 word abstract, is May 15,
2003. All participants who have returned their application form on
time, will receive an official invitation to the conference issued by
the University of Tartu. The papers of the conference will be published
in the monographic number of the annual magazine of the EACL,
Interlitteraria (9, 2004).
The conference fee is 50 USD, payable to the secretary of the ECLA,
Mrs. Kersti Unt, at the registration of the conference. Registration
fee also covers lunch during the conference (Sept 29, 30, and Oct.1)
EACL will provide the participants from foreign countries with modest
accommodation (at various university guesthouses and hostels) during
the conference (3 to 4 nights), covering also the accommodation costs.
An effort will be made to accommodate all participants in a single
room. At their own expense, participants can stay at any of the local
hotels, which provide more luxurious accommodations. Organizers will
gladly assist with reservations (the prices vary from 40 to 80 USD per
night).
There will be a cultural programme for the conference participants: a
sightseeing in Tartu (and hopefully in Tallinn), visits to museums, the
theatre, etc. Details of the cultural programme will be posted shortly
before the conference on EVKA's website (http://www.ut.ee/inlit/).
Efforts will be made by the organizers to meet the participants from
foreign countries at the Airport or the Passengers' port of Tallinn and
to assist with the transfer to Tartu (2,5 hours by bus) where they will
be met at the bus or railway station. In any event, it is also
affordable to take a taxi from the Tallinn Airport or Tallinn
Passengers' Port to the bus station.
Participants from a number of countries (USA and most European
countries) can enter Estonia without a visa. We advise the participants
from more distant countries (Asia, Latin America), in case there is no
Estonian embassy or consular office in their native country, to obtain
the Estonian visa either from some of the neighbouring countries or
from the Estonian embassy in Stockholm, Helsinki or Copenhagen, on the
way to Estonia. Unfortunately, the Estonian visa cannot be obtained
while crossing the border of Estonia.
For the weather conditions in Tartu, look at international weather
broadcasts for Stockholm, Helsinki and St.Petersburg. Their
temperatures mostly coincide with those of Tartu.
The official opening dinner of the Conference, with the presentation of
"Interlitteraria" 8, 2003, will take place in the evening of Sept.28.
Full conference working days are Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 1, 2003.
