*Postdoctoral Research Associate in Human-Computer Interaction and
Computer Support Cooperative Work*
A postdoctoral researcher is required to work on a 30-month project
to develop effective tools for Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC)
among small groups. The work is funded by the Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council.
The project, entitled "An identity-based framework for
computer-mediated communication", will use two distinct theories of
communication with the aims of:
deriving new knowledge about the way people communicate with one
another to be incorporated into a framework for the design and
evaluation of CMC systems.
applying design principles and techniques with reference to the
framework to construct a fully functional prototype of a 'lean media'
CMC system.
Email is now used in nearly all businesses and becoming commonplace
in wider society. It presents opportunities for shaping effective
dialogues between people and groups. This project seeks to promote
effective discussion by identifying the key design parameters for
cohesive message exchange among people with a common interest. It
will do this by examining strategies for individuals and groups to
manage their activities in terms of their own emerging sense of
purpose and identity.
The successful candidate will have been involved in research allied
to Human-Computer Interaction or Computer-Supported Cooperative Work.
The project will require the design, implementation and empirical
evaluation of a prototype and so requires a combination of social
science research and software development skills. Applicants should
EITHER already have, or be near completing, a PhD, OR be a graduate
with suitable experience in lieu of a PhD. The post holder will be
expected to carry out innovative and valid research activities that
require careful analysis of communication in the English language.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they are competent to
take on this kind of work.
Specific knowledge that is advantageous to applicants includes but is
not limited to: object-oriented software engineering techniques, Java
programming, PYTHON, SQL and relational database design, web
technologies (such as PHP, XML and XSLT), knowledge representation,
discourse analysis, Social Identity Theory, Common Ground,
experimental design and statistics.
Applicants should be aware that the appointment must start by 1st
November 2003.
Salary will be within the RA1A scale: £18,265 - £20,311 per annum.
Applications including a covering letter, a full CV and the names of
two referees, should be sent to:
Dr Leon Watts,
Department of Computation,
UMIST,
PO Box 88,
Manchester M60 1QD
([log in to unmask] ).
The closing date is 16 June 2003.
Interviews are expected to be held approximately two weeks after the
closing date.
