Call for Papers

Crossing the Waters: the Cross-Cultural Connections of Lifeways,
Society, and the Fine and Folk Arts in the Mediterranean and Across the
Atlantic
The University of Minnesota Duluth, its partner institutions named
above, and cultural organizations in Palermo, Italy, the Accademia di
Belle Arti and the Conservatario Statale di Musica, "Vincenzo Bellini,"
are hosting an Italian American Festival, a collaboration of students
and faculty in producing several theatrical and musical events, in
Duluth and Palermo, in early 2004. An international academic conference
is planned to occur simultaneously with the Italian American Festival
cultural events in Duluth, April 29 - May 1, 2004.
The conference will explore the connections, transmissions, and
transformations of cultural traditions and social institutions among
Mediterranean societies, to and within the Americas through immigration
and other processes, and between the "fine" and folk arts. Many academic
disciplines would be appropriate to the conference including: history,
anthropology, popular culture, folk literature, Italian-American
studies, film, opera, visual arts, education, immigration studies,
sociology, music, theatre, dance, linguistics and language studies, and
more. In keeping with the multi-disciplinary approach of the conference,
we invite scholars from the sciences, business and economics, and
medicine, as well as the humanities and social sciences.
Topics of conference papers might include:
=>Comparisons of Children's Literature in Italy and America
=> Culture-based Industries
=> Comparative Ecological Studies Between the Mediterranean and the
Great Lakes => Survivals of Folk Traditions in Immigrant Populations =>
Different Approaches to Tourism, => Comparisons of Celebrity Culture =>
Arabic Influences in Sicily => Italian-American Miners in Northern
Minnesota => Stress Management Strategies in Europe and the U.S., and
many more.
The Conference is intended to:
=> create connections with academic colleagues in the United States and
Europe => celebrate and increase understanding of the various ethnic and
cultural traditions of northeastern Minnesota and Italy => explore the
past, present and future connections between ethnic heritage in the
United States, especially Italian American, and communities of origin in
Europe
Conference activities will include:
=> a multi- and disciplinary International Academic Conference of
scholars invited to present papers on the conference theme => evocative
Keynote Addresses, selected to highlight conference themes and
sub-themes => panels organized to provide for Discussion and Comment
among presenters and with the audience => publication of Conference
Proceedings and video recording for future broadcast => opportunities
for participants to tour the heritage and cultural attractions of
Duluth, the Iron Range, northeastern Minnesota, and its many ethnic
communities => auxiliary events such as dinners and receptions, with
appropriate Mediterranean food and wine.
Duluth, Minnesota is an international port on the St. Lawrence Seaway,
the westernmost extension of the Atlantic Ocean, 150 miles north of the
Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, on the shores of Lake Superior.
The city is a regional center for education, government, healthcare,
mining, timber, tourism, and transportation, and is strongly influenced
by numerous immigrant groups and ethnic traditions. Convenient air
