'THE RIGHT IN FRANCE AND ITALY'
When, in April 2002, the French Front National candidate, Jean Marie Le
Pen, beat the socialist, Lionel Jospin, in the first round of the
Presidential elections and proceeded into the second round run-off against
incumbent President, Jacques Chirac, there was a certain irony in the
event. For, in putting the danger of the extreme right at the heart of
European politics, it demonstrated the political similarities which France
has with its transalpine cousins. Less than a year before, Silvio
Berlusconi, TV tycoon-turned-politician, and his 'House of Freedoms'
alliance had also won a convincing victory against a divided left, and this
victory too had provoked much worry and unease among European political
leaders and in the press. Moreover, if the advent of the second Berlusconi
government has not brought the 'Italian transition' to an end, the manner
of its election could be argued powerfully to symbolise the end of much of
what had been 'unique' about Italy as a West European democracy. It is
therefore appropriate, roughly two years after the advance of the Right in
the two countries, to explore the significance of these events, as well as
the extent to which the experience of each country can help to throw light
on the experience of the other.
