1.
More and more academics are finding it necessary, often useful and
sometimes enlightening to place their work on a given culture into a
comparative perspective. It can be done by simply matching two similar
objects of study in two different cultures, but this can be enriched by
looking at cross-influences shaping the course of two countries, and
further illuminated by a study of mutual representations at work in the two
societies under study. There is one pair of countries for which such an
approach is particularly fruitful because they have been enmeshed in such a
long succession of wars and alliances, of exchanges and rivalry, of
cross-border -- or rather, cross-Channel -- influences that one is tempted
to disbelieve how different they have become and remain. This pair is the
strange couple made of Britain and France. Whether you are personally
engaged in such comparative work or wish to confront your research on one
particular aspect of one of the two cultures to similar work being
conducted in the other one, we invite you to present a paper at a joint
conference of CRECIB and ASMCF members to be held at Université Paris 13
on 4-6 September 2003.
To know more about it, see the conference website:

Britain: Off-shore island
or
global nexus?
What is it that has made Britain distinctive in the eyes of the rest of the
world as well as for its own inhabitants? How can the nature and growth of
a distinctive British political, social, economic and cultural identity or
identities be explained? Papers are invited from people interested in the
history of Britain, especially but not exclusively in the period since 1503
(the marriage of James IV of Scotland with Margaret Tudor), as well as in
the study of British society today. Papers may address internal dynamics or
external relations or both. 13-14 June 2003

Dear All

We are publishing the first edition of Atlas: The Area Studies Project
Bulletin in June. One of the main aims of the project is to foster a sense
of community amongst practitioners of Area Studies. I feel that one good
way to achieve this would be to publish brief reports from the various Area
Studies conferences which have taken place over the Easter break. If you
would be willing to write a brief 150-200 word report about a conference
you attended then please contact me.

If you would like to contribute an article relating to the teaching and
learning of Area Studies there is still the time to do this. I have
extended the original deadline due to the lateness of Easter this year. If
you have any relvant news items or details of forthcoming conferences you
would like me to include then please contact me.

Best wishes

John
