4.2 Seminar on 'Dangerous' and 'deceitful': learner identities in
cyberspace Thursday 8 May, 3.30 - 5.00pm (light refreshments from
3.15pm) Higher and Community Education Meeting Room M2,
Paterson's Land, University of Edinburgh

Presented by Siān Bayne, Department of Media, Culture and
Communication at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh.

How do students experience their identities as online learners?
How do such identities relate to those they inhabit in embodied
'real life'? This talk weaves together theories of cyberspace
subjectivity with the stories of students and tutors in order to
explore the themes of mutability, deceit and metamorphosis in
identity construction online.

In particular, it will consider the common perspective emerging from
students' stories in which online modes of identity formation are
viewed negatively, as a dangerous deceit or deviance from the
'natural'. These perspectives will be compared with the narratives of
tutors for whom, surprisingly, the online space becomes a place in
which traditional hierarchies can be re-asserted, and conventionally
teacherly identities re-cast.

Siān Bayne is currently researching
students' experience of online learning and is co-editor of
'Education in Cyberspace' to be published by Routledge Falmer in
2004.

This event is organised as part of the HE seminar series organised
by Higher and Community Education. If you would like to attend
please fill in the registration form at:
http://www.tla.ed.ac.uk/events/HELearner.html (no fee). This is to

initiatives. This essential one day conference examines how and
where ICT has been used to deliver benefit in regeneration projects.
Our speakers have direct experience of implementing ICT solutions
in this sector and will share their experiences of how best to
approach the use of ICT, and what to avoid. In particular the
programme will address:

Community development and participation through ICT
The place of ICT in housing re-development and in skill acquisition
The impact on regeneration of centre based ICT initiatives, for
example UK Online Relationships with the private sector:
supporters or sharks? Opportunities presented by DiTV and TV
over PCs The conference will be heavily case study based, with
each speaker addressing the question: "Can ICT support
regeneration?" Cases described will vary from multi-million pound
capital investment through to low cost community work. There will
be three alternative workshops

ICT and Economic development
ICT in Community development
Alternative engagement channels

The Conference is supported by Regeneration and Renewal

5.1 Learning and Teaching Portal Scenario
Polite request for your input to enable effective design interfaces to
be developed.

LTSN and JISC are currently funding a joint project to produce a set
of services for HE and FE learning and teaching communities. This
is a collaborative project working in particular with ILTHE, BECTA
and HESDA. Services planned include: · A funding opportunities
database detailing all opportunities related to teaching and
learning· An agency mapping database that will enable users to
discover information about learning and teaching agencies UK
wide. A discussion forum thatwill hosting both national and
international virtual events. The knowledge built through these
developed discussions will be synthesised and become resources
for future use. · A cross searching facility enabling users to
discover resources for learning and teaching across a range of data
bases including JISC, LTSN and other partner agency's sites.

We are currently in the process of developing the funding
opportunities and agency mapping database and are seeking input
from the community on how you might use this service. We are
therefore inviting you to contribute scenarios of how they might use
such a resource. Examples of each follow, but style is immaterial:

"George is a learning technologist working in a medium-sized
university on a short-term contract. He has been developing an
interactive CD to enhance biology field trips within his institution.
He has completed the majority of the work but has been asked to
add further features to the resource and requires funding for a
further six months to complete the tasks. He goes to the web and
finds the funding opportunities service. He needs to find the
following information; a body providing funding for his discipline and
sector, who would have to sign off the bid, how many bids are
available per institution and how he applies for the funding."

"I have just come back from a meeting with some Scottish
colleagues and they might just as well have been talking in Gaelic.
As a Senior Manager in an FEI, I did not like to show my ignorance
and ask what every agency acronym meant, but now I will have to
quickly find out. But the Scottish system is so different from the
English one and I need to make sense of not only what these
agencies do but also if there is any structural relationship between
them. It would be handy knowing whom to contact about their
widening participation agenda too."

If you have a scenario you can offer, please could you send it to

5.9 New JISCMAIL lists

We are pleased to announce a suite of new JISC mailing lists that
have been set up by the Economic and Social Data Service
(ESDS). The Economic and Social Data Service is a new UK
national data service that brings together four centres of expertise
in data creation, preservation and use, based at the Universities of
Essex and Manchester: UK Data Archive; Institute for Social and
Economic Research; Manchester Information and Associated
Services; Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research.
These centres are working collaboratively to provide preservation,
dissemination, user support and training for an extensive range of
key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative,
spanning many disciplines and themes. Economic and Social
Data Service web site: www.esds.ac.uk

* A news list, esds-news, has been set up to inform users of
forthcoming events, new data releases and new developments
across ESDS.

ESDS comprises a number of specialist data services that offer
provide value-added data and documentation products and
enhanced support for the secondary use of data across the
research, learning and teaching communities. Each service has
established its own discussion list:

* esds-govsurveys - run by ESDS Government
(www.esds.ac.uk/government) at CCSR for large-scale government
data;

5.10 The 2003 Computer-assisted Assessment (CAA) survey
follows up on and extends the 1999 National CAA Survey that was
conducted by the CAA Centre. The results will be fed into a JISC-
funded assessment project (TOIA) and will appear in publications
including the proceedings of the 7th International CAA Conference.

We are interested in the views of both users and non-users of CAA.
Therefore, even if you have no direct experience of CAA, we would
still greatly value your opinions. We will enter the names from all
completed questionnaires submitted by the 16th of May 2003 in a
draw for two £25 Book Tokens.

This survey is hosted by Questionmark Computing Ltd. The raw
data you provide will not be used by Questionmark or the survey
team to contact respondents (except to contact you in the event of
your winning a prize). It will be stored securely and deleted as soon
as reasonably possible in accordance with the Data Protection Act
(1995). You will probably need to allocate at least 30 minutes to
complete it. To participate in the 2003 survey, please go to
http://www.questionmark.com/links/CAA2003.htm

Thank you for your time.
