Middlesbrough Healthy Living Centre: Research Studentship
School of Social Sciences and Law University of Teesside
POST TITLE: Healthy Living Centre Research Studentship
(Three year Appointment) £8,300:00 p.a.
Background
The Healthy Living in Middlesbrough is a one of a network of about 400
Centres programme across the UK, established by the The New Opportunities
Fund (NOF). Healthy Living Centres projects aim to promote good health in
its broadest
sense, focusing upon the most disadvantaged in society to reduce health
inequalities. They work with service users and local communities to design
and deliver health according to local need and attempt to promote social
inclusion, build partnership between sectors and agencies, and work towards
sustainable health.
The Research Student will work within a team of researchers evaluating local
and regional complex community initiatives including: Teesside Health Action
Zone, and Sure Start Programmes. The evaluators have developed a
participatory approach to meet the needs of complex community based
initiatives, recognizing the complexity of initiatives designed to improve
the health and well being and the importance of stakeholder participation.
Such initiatives present challenges for evaluators because they typically:
highly complex, they have numerous and changing goals, and often difficult
to measure outcomes.
Whilst focusing on more general evaluation of the HLC, such as project
outcome and efficiency, a particular concern of this evaluation would be to
focus on key thematic areas identified across a number of the projects
involved in the HLC. These are: young people, participation and mental
health.
