I don't think there is a drop in attendance. Some students really like it
and will come to class asking about points they picked up from the
website but not from the oral presentation. I think it helps that I teach
at a small school so if someone hasn't been in class I can make it clear
that what's online isn't a substitute for coming to class. Plus if the
class is any good it generates discussion which can't be placed online.

A side point: for me it's something I can point to in responding to the
student who says "I didn't do the assignment because I couldn't understand
your speech". It's also written down, and some people learn better by
reading, others by listening.
