This is the letter I sent to the Telegraph today:
Dear Sir,
The Kipling Society is grateful to the Telegraph for giving prominence to
Andrew Roberts's article on the rehabilitation of Rudyard Kipling, and the
Elizabeth Longford Historical Biography prize awarded to David Gilmour for
his biography. However, there is one serious misprint, which must only be a
misprint, but needs amendment: Kipling died in 1936.
George V died two days later, eliciting the comment "The King has gone and
taken his trumpeter with him", or words to that effect. But not least, The
Daily Telegraph wrote "In the midst of her greater sorrow, England was not
unmindful yesterday of the poet who above all others has honoured her
achievement in undying verse."
With best wishes,
Jane Keskar
