Kipling is quoted again in "The Times", April 11, page 24, now by the
leading columnist Simon Jenkins, at end of his article re future government
of Iraq he quotes correctly from 2 verses of "The White Man's
Burden" Jenkins comments "It was propaganda goading Americans to colonise
the Philippines in 1889." The US was at war with Spain. See e.g. Gilmour
(2002) at pages 126-130, Peter Keating (1994) pp117-120, Lycett (1999)
p311, Angus Wilson (1977),pp204-5. See the mentions of the controversy re
the meanings of the verses.
So Kiipling continues to be topical in current wars.
