The Brussels Office of Arlene McCarthy MEP is looking for a Stagiere from
mid-August 2003 to July 2004.

Deadline for applications is the week ending 16th May 2003.

Interviews will be held in Manchester between 19th May & 6th June 2003.

Please note this is an expenses only position.

Would suit gap or placement year student.

YEAR ABROAD WORK PLACEMENT -  EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

'         POSITION:     Full time stage in the office of Arlene McCarthy MEP
from mid-August 2003 until the end of July 2004 based in her Brussels office
of the European Parliament.

'         ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

You will work alongside Arlene McCarthy and her Parliamentary Assistant in
the European Parliament in Brussels.

Arlene McCarthy is the Labour MEP representing the North West region. Arlene
is a member of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs and Internal Market
Committee, and the Regional Transport and Tourism Committee. Additionally,
Arlene is Vice-President of the EP's Sport Intergroup and convenor of the
Urban Affairs Group in the European Parliament.

As well as general office duties, the placement will involve responsibility
for organising Arlene's travel arrangements, organising and liasing with
visitor's groups, attending meetings on various subjects and helping the
Parliamentary Assistant and Constituency Office staff in their work.

You will also be required to draft many letters, and responses to the
numerous and diverse letters received each week. This will involve research,
and liaison with Parliamentarians in Brussels and Westminster, other EU
institutions and Non-governmental Organisations.

The position mainly involves speaking English when in the office, although
French is the main language of the Parliament. However, Modern Language
students will need to be motivated to speak their foreign language, as
English is becoming more commonplace in Brussels. Also, please note that
this post can involve long hours, and on occasions you will accompany Arlene
to meetings, functions and Strasbourg Plenary Sessions.

'         QUALITIES:   The person appointed to the above post will have the
following

Qualities:

A sound knowledge of the EU

Ability to keep calm under pressure and in a busy environment

Excellent organisational and communication skills

Previous experience of office administration an advantage

An interest in regional and urban development issues would also be of
benefit

It would also be an advantage for the person to be a Member of the Labour
Party
